3 held over gang-rape of apparel worker on running bus

An apparel worker was allegedly gang raped by driver and staff on a running bus at Madhupur in Tangail on Friday morning.
The police arrested three people including the prime accused at places in Dhanbari on Friday night, Mozibur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Dhanbari police station, said on Saturday.
The arrested — prime accused Habibur Rahman Nayan, 28, drive of the bus, and its two staff Rezaul Karim Jewel, 38, and Abdul Khaleq Bhutto, 23 — would be produced before a Tangail court today, he said.
The victim’s husband filed a case against nine people in this connection with the police station on Friday night.
Rehana Parvin, gynaecologist of Tangail Medical College Hospital, said today the medical test of the victim has been performed.
As she is married, more procedure and tests need to be done, the physician added.
The victim, who lives in Gazipur, said she went to Dhanbari to visit her aunt’s house on Thursday.
Around 5:00am on Friday, she got into a bus of Binimay Paribahan from Dhanbari Bus Terminal to reach Gazipur.
As there was no other passenger at that time, the bus left the terminal and later on the driver took the bus to a different route on Tangail-Mymensingh highway.
As soon as she asked the reason, the staff started to beat her and shut the gate and all its windows.
The driver and two staff then violated her and let her get down from the bus in Sholakuri area of Madhupur. She was then taken to TMCH by locals.
Her husband said leaders of Tangail bus workers association took him to their office from the hospital on Friday.
‘I came to know the rapists were present there,’ he said.
‘The leaders including Ilias, Jalu, Selim, Lablu, Military Selim, and Latif Munshi, and others put pressure on me to settle the matter and not to take legal action.’
‘They assured me of justice by arbitration to be held on April 6 and arranging compensation for the incident,’ he said.
Meanwhile, Tangail police super Saleh Md Tanvir, at a press conference, said those who are trying to take the matter to another stream would also be brought to book.
