12,887 students absent on 1st day of HSC exam
Forty-three examinees were expelled for copying and 12,887 remained absent on the first day of Higher Secondary Certificate and equivalent examinations that began on Sunday, according to education ministry control room formed to oversee the HSC exam.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the exam was going on smoothly across the country.
‘No untoward incident was reported,’ he said while visiting Shiddheshwari Girls’ College centre in Dhaka.
The education ministry is looking at options to complete public examinations within a short period of time, said Nahid while talking to reporters at Shiddheshwari Girls’ College.
‘We are working on the issue and decision will be finalised after consultation with stakeholders, educationists and guardians,’ he said.
‘Personally I want to complete public examinations within five or six days,’ he added.
Now public examinations like the SSC and the HSC are held in about one and a half months and many schools that are used as examinations centres remain closed during the exam time.
General stream students took their Bangla first paper examination and madrassah students took the Quran Majeed examination on the opening day.
The control room said 12,887 students did not turn out to take the exams on the first day and 43 students were expelled for adopting unfair means in exam halls.
About 12.19 lakh examinees — 6.54 lakh boys and 5.65 lakh girls — from 8,533 colleges and madrassahs, are taking the exam at 2,452 centres across the country.
More than 10.20 lakh students are sitting for the HSC exam under eight general education boards and some 91,600 students are appearing in Alim exam under the madrassah board while one lakh students are taking business management exam under the technical board.
Theoretical exams will end on June 9 while practical examinations will be held between June 11 and June 20.
