Country lacks true democracy, says Manju

Jatiya Party faction chairman Anwar Hossain Manju, also the forest and environment minister, said on Saturday that the country now lacked true democracy.
The country is passing a very critical time and democracy is treading on a dangerous path, he said at the opening session of the party’s tri-annual national conference at Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh auditorium in the capital.
‘If we fail to give democracy an institutional shape, we have to face more anarchic situations,’ he said.
The country cannot run undemocratically for a long time and people would not allow this for long in the name of democracy, he said.
Party secretary general Sheikh Shahidul Ialam said that a constitutional government was ruling the country, but it has failed to control militancy and ensure good governance.
Chaired by Anwar Hossain Manju, the inaugural session was also addressed, among others, by Awami League leader Shajahan Khan, also the shipping minister, Samyabadi Dal general secretary Dilip Barua, Jatiya Samajtrantrik Dal faction general secretary Shirin Akhter and Gana Azadi League general secretary SK Shikder.
The opening session was followed by a council session and several hundred, councillors from across the country took part in it to elect a new central committee.
