Speaker urges AmCham to work for regaining US GSP facility

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday called upon the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh to work to regain GSP facilities for the Bangladeshi garment products in the US market.
She made the call while speaking as chief guest at a discussion on ‘democracy, economy and trade’ organised by the AmCham in a city hotel.
Bangladesh lost the generalised system of preferences facility for its exports to the US market after the Rana Plaza building collapse that killed more than 1,100 RMG workers in April 2013.
‘An investment-friendly environment is now prevailing in Bangladesh,’ Shirin said and urged the AmCham representatives also to work to bring US investment in the information technology sector in Bangladesh.
She called for removing disparity along with economic development for the welfare of all in country.
The Speaker said even rapid economic growth in a country cannot bring welfare for all in society because of disparity.
‘Though some people get extra privileges in society, others remain deprived,’ she said and called upon the country’s policymakers to be more careful about the situation while formulating policies.
Shirin said half of the population in the country are women, who fall victims to discriminations in education, health, employment and right to wealth.
She said the women are now progressing in education and all other sectors because various government steps taken for the development.
The Speaker said the main objective of democracy is bringing significant changes to the living standard of the people and the present government is working to this end.
‘Bangladesh is now an emerging economic power,’ she said and hoped that the country would be able to attain sustainable development because of time-befitting steps taken by the government.
AmCham president Nurul Islam and US embassy charge d’ affairs David Meale also spoke on the occasion.
