RU teacher murder: MP Badshah finds police negligence
Police is yet to unearth the mystery behind the killing of Rajshahi University’s English professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee even three days into the murder.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of RU and other universities of the country and different cultural organisations continued their protests against the killing.
Unidentified miscreants hacked the 58-year-old professor in Shalbagan area in Rajshahi city Saturday morning while he was going to catch the university transport.
The victim’s son filed a case with the Boalia police and later the case was transferred to the detective branch of police.
New Age correspondent in Rajshahi, quoting police, reported that police had been trying to find out clues behind the killing and investigating it from three different angles.
‘We have been quizzing the detained youth but yet to get any clue,’ said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner Golam Ebne Saqlain.
The investigator of the case, Jahidul Islam, also officer-in-charge of Rajshahi DB, told New Age that they were conducting their investigation keeping three aspects in mind — whether the murder had any link to militancy, whether he had previous enmity in native village or if there were any conflict within his department.
RMP commissioner Mohammed Shamsuddin said they formed a six-member monitoring committee and hoped to find out the motive soon.
Meanwhile, local lawmaker Fazle Hossaind Badsha, who is also the general secretary of Workers Party of Bangladesh, at a press conference in a city restaurant said police completely failed to ensure the security of people in Rajshahi.
He demanded formation of an anti-terrorism taskforce in Rajshahi to check such crimes.
Our correspondent in RU reported that teachers and students of RU continued their demonstrations on the campus for the third consecutive day protesting at the killing of Rezaul and demanding arrest of the ‘perpetrators’ within seven days.
The teachers and students of RU English department, wearing black badges, brought out a silent procession which ended in a rally of Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association.
The teachers also submitted a memorandum to the prime minister, home minister and education minister through the RU vice-chancellor to press home their demands.
RU Kendria Sangskritik Jote, a platform of ten cultural organisations, Assistant Employee Committee and Club, RU Awami League Officers’ Council, RU Film Society and Rajshahi Mahila Parishad expressed solidarity with RUTA’s programme.
Later, addressing a mourning programme organised by RU English department, the slain professor’s wife Hosne Ara Sheera, son Riasat Imtiaz Sourav and daughter Rizwana Hasin Shotovi spoke.
Hosne Ara Sheera expressed her anxiety about getting justice and requested the prime minister to prove her power and also the progress of the country by bringing the killers to justice.
The Bangladesh Agricultural University Teachers’ Association and the Comilla University Teachers’ Association formed human chains separately on their respective campus on Monday morning.
Different progressive organisations including Udichi Shilpi Gosthi also held a rally in front of the National Press Club in the afternoon to protest at the RU teacher killing.
