RU professor murder: Madrassah teacher, imam held

Police arrested the imam of a mosque and a madrassah teacher in connection with the murder of Rajshahi University professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee from the slain teacher’s village home at Baghmara on Tuesday.
Protests against the killing continued on the day at different universities.
The detainees were identified as Raihan Ali, 32, imam of Rezaul’s village mosque in Dorgamaria of Baghmara, and Monsur Ali, 48, a madrassah teacher of the same village.
Earlier, police arrested a local leader of Islami Chhtra Shibir, Jamaat-e-Islami-backed student organisation, for the murder.
The Shibir leader, Hafizur Rahman, is a public administration student of Rajshahi University.
Unidentified assailants hacked to death Rezaul Karim Siddiquee near his home on his way to the university on Saturday. Police suspect that the murder was committed by militants.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner Md Shamsuddin told New Age that the slain professor set up a musical school at his village Dorgamaria when the imam, Raihan, and the madrassah teacher, Monsur Ali, had tried to resist the move.
‘Police suspected that the two might have involvement in the murder,’ he said.
Meanwhile, some 2,000 students of Rajshahi University blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi highway for around two hours near the campus, protesting at the murder of Rezaul Karim, reported our RU correspondent.
They announced similar blockade for today [Wednesday] from 9:00am to 1:00pm.
Besides, teachers and students of English, anthropology departments and the university unit of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee held separate programmes on the campus demanding trial in the killings of Rezaul Kairm and other slain free-thinking writers, bloggers and publishers.
Wearing black badge, teachers and students at Jahangirnagar University formed a human chain on the campus, demanding immediate arrest of the killers of Rezaul Karim, reported our JU correspondent.
The teachers under the banner of Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association also submitted a memorandum to the prime minister, home minister and education minister through the university vice-chancellor Farzana Islam.
Former students of Rajshahi University’s English department staying in Dhaka formed a human chain in front of National Museum at Shahbagh, demanding trial in the gruesome murder, reported our DU correspondent.
Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri also brought out a torch procession at Shahbagh in the evening demanding trial of the killers of Rezaul Karim.
The teachers of Chittagong University held a protest rally on the campus, demanding speedy trial of the killers of Rezaul Karim, reported our CU correspondent.
They demanded protection for progressive teachers, poets and writers and other intellectuals of the country.
