FAST UNTO DEATH: 29 nurses fall sick on second day

At least 29 nurses fell sick and three of them were hospitalised as unemployed nurses continued their fast unto death on Friday in front of National Press Club, seeking jobs on seniority.
They started the fast unto death on Thursday evening, 25 days after their non-stop sit-in at the same venue. Around 200 agitating nurses joined the strike.
The nurses began their movement on April 4 under the joint banner of Bangladesh Diploma Unemployed Nurses’ Association and Bangladesh Basic Graduate Nurses’ Society.
General secretary of unemployed nurses’ association Farukh Hossain told New Age that they would continue their fast unto death until their demands were met.
He said after failing to get any assurance from the government during their non-stop sit-in, they began fast unto death to realise the demands.
The unemployed nurses began their protest on March 30, two days after the Public Service Commission had published an advertisement to appoint 3,616 senior staff nurses through recruitment examinations, an unprecedented system to appoint nurses in the country, nurses said.
The nurses’ leaders alleged that the government initiative to appoint nurses through recruitment tests was meant for ‘doing appointment business.’
They urged the PSC to withdraw the March 28 appointment circular, immediately.
