City fire leaves 55 families homeless

Around 55 families were rendered homeless as their shanties were burnt in a fire that broke out in the city’s Farmgate area on Wednesday morning.
The families, mostly low-income, were residing at 12 shanties made of tins, bamboos and woods, locals said.
The fire erupted at the slum behind Green Super Market near Farm Gate bus stop around 8:35am, said Ataur Rahman, duty officer of the fire service control room.
Eleven fire trucks rushed to the spot and doused the blaze around 9:45am, he said.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Dhaka north city mayor Annisul Haque visited the spot.
They promised to provide them with financial supports.
The reason behind the fire could not be known immediately, said the fire service officials, but the dwellers suspected that electric short circuit might have caused the fire.
Fire Service Mohammadpur station’s officer Abu Bakar Zaman told New Age that 55 indigent families lived there.
Some houses were two-storey but made of tin, bamboos and woods which were inflammable, he said.
In another incident, fire broke out at a restaurant at Rampura around 10:30am.
Atiqul Islam, duty officer of the fire service control room, said the fire had been put out by locals before the fire fighters reached there.
