Jamaat’s hartal ignored

The countrywide 24-hour hartal called by the Jamaat-e-Islami was ignored on Thursday as it had hardly any effect the daily normal life.
Jamaat called the countrywide general strike from 5:00am on Thursday to 5:00am today protesting against the execution of its amir Nizami, who was hanged early Wednesday for crimes against humanity committed during Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.
In the capital, some schools were closed but examinations were held.
Other educational institutions, offices, businesses were open, though some banks ran operations keeping the main entrances closed during the hartal.
Traffics remain almost normal in the streets and roads in the capital, others major cities and towns while transports including buses and cars plied in the highways.
Train and ferry services operated without any disruption.
No pickets were seen.
Additional members of law enforcing agencies were deployed at key points in the capital to avert any untoward situation, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner [media] Maruf Hossain Sorder.
No violence was reported marking the hartal, he said.
New Age correspondents in districts including Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Rangpur, Barisal, Mymenshigh, Jessore, Bogra, Natore and Comilla reported that the general strike put no effect on normal life in the districts.
