Lightning strikes kill 25
At least 25 people were killed in separate incidents of lightning strike in the capital and six other districts on Thursday as westerly low and seasonal low were lying over the country.
Met office said rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind were likely to occur at a few places over Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions till Friday.
On Thursday’s thundershowers, two students were killed in the capital, five in Rajshahi, five in Sirajganj,
six in Pabna, three in Narsingdi, two in Gazipur and one each in Dinajpur and Brahmanbaria.
In the capital’s Jatrabari, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology’s computer science department student Sahed Sohagh, 24, and Mohakhali polytechnic student Rumon Hasan Lincoln, 19, were killed as a thunder bolt struck at a playground in the area at about 5:00pm.
Disaster management control room in-charge Saleh Uddin said they had reports of killing five people in lightning strikes in Rajshahi in the afternoon.
New Age correspondent in Rajshahi reports: three people were killed and four others injured by a lightning strike in Mohonpur upazila in the afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Abdur Razzak, 28, of Ata Narayanpur village, Abdul Aziz, 50, of Hattoir village and Sri Soito Chandra, 30, of Dangapara village. They died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck them during a storm around 1:30pm, said Abdus Samad, chairman of Mohonpur upazila.
New Age correspondent in Narsingdi reports: three persons, including two house wives, were killed in three separate lightning strikes at sadar upazila and Raipura upazila in the afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Karim, 52, of Mohishashura village and Fuli Begum, 32, of Champaknagar village of the same upazila, and Josna Begum, 45, wife of Mosleh Uddin, of Fakirchar village in Raipura upazila.
New Age Dinajpur correspondent reports: a farmer was killed in lightning strike in Phulbari upazila in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Mongal Murmu, 50, of village Basudevpur of the same upzilla.
New Age Sirajganj correspondent reports: at least five people were killed in separate lightning strikes in Raipur and Ullapara upazila on Thursday.
Among the deceased, three were from Raipur upazila. They were identified as Nupur, 8, daughter of Nur Nabi of Chwakpur village, Abdul Motaleb, 42, of Baikunthapur village, and Anwar Hossain, 45, a teacher of Hasil Madrassah.
Besides, two were killed in Ullapara upazila. They were identified as Abdul Latif, 35, of Shimla village and Shahinur Begum, 30, of Betua village.
New Age Brahmanbaria correspondent reports: a housewife, Jahanara Begum, 48, of village Dubajayee in Sarail upazila, was killed in lightning strike at about noon.
New Age Pabna correspondent reports: six people were killed in separate thunder strikes in Sujanagar upazila and Chatmohor upazila.
They are — Shahid Sarkar, 58, of Dakkhin Char village, Hira, 14, of Sonatala village, Moyen Uddin, 65, of Ranigram, and her granddaughter Shikha, 14 — of Sujanagar upazila.
In Chatmohor upazila, Fazlur Rahman, 40, and Sabir Uddin, 70, of Baukandi village also killed in a thunder strike.
Besides, lightning strikes killed two people in Sripur of Gazipur on Thursday, reports our correspondent.
