Two killed, 4 injured as train rams bus on Ctg crossing
Two women were killed and four others, including two children, received injury as an oil-carrying train hit a bus in Chittagong city’s Sholoshahar Monday morning.
The accident took place at Gate 2 Rail Crossing around 11:00am while the bus was on the rail crossing.
Of the deceased one was identified as Bibi Marium, 35, of Muradpur at Sitakunda while the other woman’s identity could not be known immediately.
The injured are Nur Nabi, 60, Ratna Begum, 35, her son Noman, 8, and deceased Marium’s son Sami, 12.
They were undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical Collage and Hospital.
Chittagong railway police officer-in-charge Himangsu Das Rana said the Sholoshahar-bound BRTC bus from Oxygen area was crossing the rail track, when the Hathazari-bound train which was carrying oil for a power plant hit it, leaving six people injured.
Police and locals took them to CMCH where on-duty doctors declared Marium and another woman dead.
Himangshu said there were crossing bars and a gateman at the rail crossing. The bus was trying to cross the track but it could not move forward or backward as there was traffic jam on both sides. Some passengers jumped out of the bus while some were inside.
‘The train hit the rear of the bus and dragged it nearly 200 yard away from the crossing. The last compartment (guard rack) of the train also derailed in the accident. Later the train and the bus were rescued,’ said Himangshu.
Divisional railway manager Manjurul Alam Chowdhury said the gateman had lowered the bars but the bus driver, ignoring it, tried to cross the railway tracks.
He said a three-member committee, headed by divisional transportation office Firoz Iftekhar, to probe the incident.
