Teacher’s humiliation: School now suspends him

School authorities on Tuesday suspended the headmaster, who was subjected to public humiliation in Narayanganj for allegedly hurting religious sentiment of the Muslims, when law minister Anisul Huq warned that those involved in the heinous act would be punished.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday also asked Directorate of Secondary Education and Higher Education to launch an inquiry into the humiliation of Shyamal in public.
Locals in presence of lawmaker Selim Osman made Piyar Sattar Latif High School head teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta to go up and down holding his ears on May 13 after mob beating.
The locals were mobilised through an announcement from a local mosque that Shyamal made ‘offensive comments about religion’ while meting out corporal punishment to a student of the school on May 8.
Shyamal said he received a letter, signed by the school managing committee chairman, Farukul Islam, suspending him from his post.
New Age correspondent in Naryanganj quoted Shyamal as saying that the locals were provoked by a group of teachers of the school and some locals who were conspiring against him.
The letter, issued on Monday, said that the managing committee at its meeting on May 13 decided to suspend Shyamal as he gave corporal punishments to students, made derogatory comments about religion, realised money in the name of providing jobs and remained absent from duty without notice.
The letter signed by the school’s managing body president, Farukul Islam.
When contacted, Farukul Islam declined to make any comments regarding the issue.
Meanwhile, law minister Anisul Huq termed the incident of public humiliation as heinous act and said that ‘it is a crime in line with the penal code’.
‘Those involved in humiliating the teacher will be punished, because no one can take the law into their own hands,’ Anisul Huq told reporters on the sidelines of a training programme for judicial officers in the capital.
A group of students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet on Tuesday formed a human chain holding their ears in protest at the public humiliation of Shyamal.
They stood for half-an-hour amid rain from 11:30am near the library building for what they said ‘seeking apology to the teacher,’ reports our Sylhet correspondent.
In separate statements, the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association and rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra condemned the public humiliation of the teacher and demanded impartial probe and stern legal actions against the perpetrators.
The two organisations said that beating and repression of a teacher in presence of lawmaker and members of law enforcing agency was a gravely heinous act.
A group of teachers under the banner of Prathamik Shikkhak Odhikar Surakkha Forum called on a half-hour work abstention from 12:00 noon for Thursday at all primary schools demanding punishment of the perpetrators.
A video clip of incident went viral in social media and drew widespread criticism.
