BCL men set fire to Rajshahi College hostels

Ruling Awami League-backed Chhatra League activists on Tuesday afternoon set fire to two hostels of Rajshahi College in retaliation of an attack on one of their fellows allegedly carried out by BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal men.
Police said Chhatra Dal activists beat Shahinur Rahman Shaheen, a BCL activist, over previous enmity.
Later, in retaliation, BCL men went to Abdur Rouf and Mostofa Kamal Hostel and ransacked three rooms of the JCD men.
At one stage, the agitated BCL men also set fire to the rooms, a witness said, preferring not to be named.
Contacted, BCL Rajshahi College unit president Rocky Kumar Ghosh denied the allegation of setting fire to the hostel rooms saying it was ‘a conspiracy of Chhatra Dal men’.
‘Everybody noticed that the BCL men set fire to three rooms of JCD men at two hostels,’ Chhatra Dal Rajshahi College unit president Mortuza Fahim told New Age.
Rajshahi College principal Professor Habibur Rahman said, ‘The college authorities will form a probe body to look into the matter. The offenders must be punished.’
Boalia police station officer-in-charge Shahadat Hossain Khan said extra police forces had been deployed at the hostels and on the college campus.
No case was filed, the OC added.
