National committee announces fresh programmes
National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports on Thursday announced fresh programmes in demand of scrapping coal-based power plants at Rampal in Bagerhat and Banshkhali in Chittagong.
Anu Muhammad, the member secretary of the organization, at a press conference at the central office of Communist Party of Bangaldesh in the city announced the programme.
The proposed NTPC and Orion coal-based power plants at Bagerhat would be harmful for Sunderbans, the biggest mangrove forest in the world, and the power plant at Banshkhai would be harmful for the local people and environment, Anu said.
The new programmes include holding countrywide demand day on May 29, holding rallies and processions in the districts adjacent to Sunderbans from May 20 to 30, holding countrywide demonstrations on June 5 to mark World Envirenment Day and observing Magurchhara Day on June 14.
The committee leaders raised four-point demands including dropping the proposed coal-based thermal power plants, arresting the people responsible for the killing of four people at Bashkhali and giving them exemplary punishments, and giving sufficient allocation in the coming budget for development of Petrobangla and BAPEX.
Anu Muhammad called on the government to refrain from implementing the proposed coal-based thermal power plants, otherwise the committee would announce programmes of tougher movement.
The leaders of committee, Mohammad Shah Alam, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Saiful Huq, Abdus Salam, Shubhrangshu Chakrabartty, Bazlur Rashid Firoj and others attended the press conference.
