3 more killed in electoral violence

Three more people were killed in electoral violence in Narayanganj and Panchagarh on Sunday and Saturday night, taking to 114 the death toll from electoral violence in the maiden partisan elections to union parishads.
At least 10 people were killed as electoral violence intensified during polls at 717 unions that went to the polls in the fifth phase of the staggered elections to the lowest tier of the local government institutions on Saturday.
With the latest count, at least 114 people were killed in electoral violence since the announcement of the polls schedule on February 11, according to Sushashoner Janya Nagarik, an NGO working for civil rights.
A presiding officer prosecuted 500-600 local people naming 44 in Jamalpur on Saturday night for the killing of four people in electoral violence while no case filed in killings in Chittagong, Noakhali and Comilla during polls on Saturday.
New Age correspondent in Narayanganj reported that a youth, Nazmul, 20, succumbed to injures, he received in a clash between supporters two member candidates at Jampur union of Sonargaon upazila during polls on Saturday, at a private hospital on Sunday
Sonargaon police station officer-in-charge Manjur Kader said that Nazmul, a supporter of member candidate Abdul Mannan, was beaten by supporters of another member candidate Abdus Salam.
Nazmul was taken to a private clinic in Dhaka, where he died Sunday afternoon, he said.
An elderly man, Idris Ali, was killed when supporters of a defeated member candidate chased the fans of a winning candidate at Naogaon union of Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj Saturday night.
Winning member candidate Nurul Islam said that Idris Ali was trampled during the attack by his rival’s men.
Sonargaon police station officer-in-charge Manjur Kader, however, claimed that Idris died of cardiac arrest.
In Panchagarh, Nasir Uddin, 50, was killed in a clash between supporters of two member candidates at Garinabari union of Panchagarh sadar Saturday night, reports New Age correspondent.
The clash erupted at about 10:00pm when presiding officer of Jotdarpara Government Primary School polling centre declared member candidate Tariqul Islam unofficially elected, said sadar police officer-in-charge Mominul Haque.
After the announcement, supporters of defeated member candidate Anwar Hossain attacked Tariqul’s men leaving at least 12 people injured, including Nasir, a supporter of Tariqul, he said.
Nasir was taken to a local hospital where he died, Mominul said.
In Jamalpur, Khutarchar Ebtedayee Madrasa polling centre of Bahadurabad union Asaduzzaman filed a case with Dewanganj police Saturday night against 500-600 local people naming 44 for the killing of four people in a clash during polls at the polling station on Saturday.
Jamalpur deputy commissioner Shahabuddin Khan said that the administration formed a four-member team led by additional district magistrate Alamgir Hossain to investigate the incident.
No case was filed till Sunday evening for the killing of three people including a member candidate in electoral violence at Patiya in Chittagong on Saturday, confirmed Patiya police inspector Shah Alam Haoladar.
In Noakhali, no case was filed and no probe body was formed for the killing of two people in electoral violence at Begumganj on Saturday, said Begumganj police station officer-in-charge Sajedur Rahman.
In Comilla, no case was filed and none was arrested for the killing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party rebel chairman candidate Mohammad Kamaluddin at Balarampur union under Titas upazila, said Titas police officer-in-charge Monirul Islam.
