Stop blame game, BNP tells govt

BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed on Friday said violence and extremism are going to take a terrible shape in the country as the government is only shifting the blame on BNP instead of taking any strong step to deal with the problem.
‘The incidents of killing are taking place every day, but the government is only trying to hush up its failures by blaming BNP instead of tracking down the perpetrators and bringing them to justice,’ he said.
The BNP leader came up with the remark while addressing a commemorative meeting at the National Press Club. BNP arranged the programme in memory of boxing legend Muhammad Ali who died on last Friday at a hospital in the USA at the age of 74.
Moudud alleged that the government could not hold the trials of many killing incidents from tailoring shop employee Biswajit Das one to recent ones. ‘It’s their utter failure. After every murder incident, BNP is blamed. This blame game should be stopped as it has become a harmful cause for all.’
The BNP leader said the main reason behind the rise in militancy is lack of democracy in the country which has created a vacuum in politics. ‘Taking advantage of the political vacuity, the militants are carrying out the heinous incidents.’
Mentioning that the prime minister has called for a national unity, he questioned whether a national unity can be forged leaving aside a popular party like BNP. ‘Create a united and common platform with all political parties, professional bodies and people from all walks of life, if you (PM) are sincere about it.’
Moudud also said their party will not only support the government’s move against militancy, but also provide with all-out cooperation as it hates extremism.
He also called upon the government to hold a fair election under a non-party administration to restore democracy and establish a representative government.
Chaired by BNP vice-chairman major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed, the programme was addressed, among others, by party standing committee member lieutenant general (retd) Mahbubur Rahman and joint secretary general Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal.
