People suffer for hours as transport workers clash

People suffered serious traffic congestion at Gulistan as transport workers blocked Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover for about two hours following a clash between two transport worker organisations on Monday.
Workers of two labour organisations clashed at Gulistan over an office.
Police said that the trouble bringing traffic on the flyover connecting Gulistan and Jatrabarhi in south Dhaka to a stop causing sufferings to commuters amidst scorching hot weather.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police joint commissioner (Traffic-South) Mofizuddin Ahmed said that traffic resumed at about 3:00pm and the situation was normal.
Police and witnesses said that workers of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sangstha and Dhaka Zila Sarak Paribahan Sangstha clashed near Mayor Hanif Flyover beside Bangabhaban at Gulistan at about 11:00am.
The traffic on the flyover was halted for about two hours because of the clash, witness said.
Wari police inspector Subhash Kumar Paul said that the two labour organisations clashed for occupying a rented house near the Bangabhaban as both the groups said the house belonged to them.
The police mediated between the two groups, Subhash said.
A meeting between the two groups will be held today at Wari police division deputy commissioner’s office, he said.
