SP Babul Akter goes home after interrogation
Superintendent of police Babul Akter reached home after a police interrogation about the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in Chittagong on June 5.
A team of the Detective Branch of police Dhaka Metropolitan Police dropped Babul at about 4:20pm at his in-law’s house at Meradia of Khilgaon in Dhaka from where Dhaka Metropolitan Police Motijheel division deputy commissioner Anwar Hossain along with Khilgaon police officer-in-charge took Babul with them at about 1:00am saying that the inspector general of police would talk to him, said his father-in-law Mosharraf Hossain.
Babul said over mobile phone at about 4:00pm that he was interrogated in his wife’s murder case.
Asked if he was implicated in the case, Babul replied that he was interrogated in order to verify information about and extracted from detained suspects in the case.
He, however, did not reply when asked about his whereabouts.
The home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, told reporters after a programme at Dhaka Club around noon that Babul was being interrogated in police custody about suspects held in the killing of his wife.
He said that the police were sure to have identified and arrested the ‘killers’ of Mahmuda, and Babul was being interrogated in this connection.
He, however, avoided the question if Babul was detained or arrested.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police commissioner Iqbal Bahar told New Age that he was not sure who picked up Babul Akter.
As he is the plaintiff of the case, the investigation agencies may interrogate him if needed, he added.
On June 5, Babul Akter’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and hacked to death by assailants on a motorbike while she was walking along with her son to the school bus-stop near her apartment in GEC intersection in Chittagong city.
The assailants stabbed and shot her dead on the spot as her son looked on.
Babul Akter filed a case with Panchlaish police station for the murder on June 6. The case was transferred to the Detective Branch of police.
Assistant commissioner of police Kamruzzaman, also the investigation officer of the case, told New Age that he was unaware of Babul’s whereabouts.
