Khaleda calls AL ‘party of militants’
Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday called the ruling Awami League a ‘party of militants’ and said local and foreign arms and ammunition are found on them.
She said if the militants inside the ruling party and are caught, justice, peace and security will return to the country.
She made the remarks while briefly addressing an iftar party at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium, jointly hosted by factions of BFUJ and DUJ.
The iftar party was scheduled to be held at the National Press Club and invitation cards were distributed to this end. The organisers informed at the function that all formalities were maintained for booking the venue but at the eleventh hour they were not allowed to hold it by the club authority.
Khaleda said they want and support ‘the arrest of militants’.
She came down hard on the recent arrest of ‘15,000 innocent people of which over 3,000 belonged to the BNP’ during the recent anti-militancy combing operation.
She demanded immediate release of the arrestees.
The BNP chief said opposition leaders and activists, including BNP, do not get justice as trials are being held ‘unjustly’.
She said there is now no rule of law, freedom of judiciary and as a result people are losing confidence in judiciary.
She said the incumbent government is ‘unelected and reviled by the people’.
If the government had minimum dignity and shame it would quit power and hold election to justify its legitimacy, she added.
On not being allowed to hold the iftar party at the national press club, the BNP chairperson said like the government took power forcibly, it similarly grabbed power at the press club and don’t want to hold elections here as well.
BNP leaders, different professionals including journalists, lawyers and academics also attended the iftar party.
BFUJ president Shaukat Mahmud presided over the iftar party. BFUJ secretary general M Abdullah, DUJ president Abdul Hye Sikder and general secretary Jahangir Alom Prodhan were also present.
