SP wife killing: SP’s ‘informant’ among two arrested

The police on Tuesday disclosed the arrests of two suspects, including one who reportedly supplied a firearm used in the killing of police superintendent Babul Akter’s wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in Chittagong on June 5.
Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Tuesday said Babul Akter is not under police watch over the murder.
The Chittagong police also said that they also recovered the firearms used in the killing.
Police claimed to have arrested Ehteshamul Haque, alias Haniful Haque alias Bhola, 41, is wanted by the Chittagong Metropolitan Police and accused in 16 cases including those for arms and murder, and his associate Monir Hossain on Monday night and Tuesday respectively from separate locations.
Bhola is also convicted in two cases and widely known as an informant of Babul Akter during his posting in the CMP.
CMP additional commissioner Devdas Bhattachariya in a press briefing said they arrested Bhola from the city’s Rajakhali area about 10:30pm on Monday and Monir from the same area, based on the information of Bhola, early Tuesday.
`One of the suspects [Abdul Motaleb] Wasim [who was arrested in the case on Saturday] had told the police in interrogation that they had collected the firearms from Bhola. They had returned the arms to Bhola after the murder. After finding the information, we conducted several drives in the city to arrest Bhola and recover the arms,’ said Devdas.
The police investigators claimed that Bhola supplied the firearms which were used in the murder although he not present physically on the spot at the time of the killing.
Police recovered two firearms — a pistol and a revolver— and 6 bullets of the revolver from the possession of Monir Hossain.
Police suspected that the two firearms were used in the killing but forensic examination would be required to determine it.
Chittagong metropolitan magistrate Nazmul Haque Chowdhury sent both the accused to jail pending the remand hearing, said the CMP’s assistant commissioner Kamruzaman, who is investigating the case.
Nurul Haque, councillor of ward 35, Chittagong City Corporation, told New Age that Bhola was locally known as the ‘informant’ of the police officer Babul Akter in the locality.
Bhola was reportedly picked on June 23 from the city, the family had alleged earlier.
The CMP additional commissioner, Devdas, avoided the question whether Bhola was an informant of Babul and hurriedly left the press briefing.
The job of Babul in police is not cleared since he was interrogated on Saturday and Friday night for several hours in detective branch custody which the police investigators claimed that was a part of verifying the suspects.
His being picked up at midnight and his whereabouts kept unknown for several hours had caused suspicion.
‘Issues like making Babul Akter responsible (over the killing) or saying that he is involved are yet to be surfaced,’ said the home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, on Tuesday, adding Babul Akter is not under police watch over the murder.
Asaduzzaman, talking to journalists in a city programme, also said, ‘The reports that Babul was interrogated are not
true. The criminals were grilled in his presence to ascertain if he knew them and to expose motive of the murder.’
‘Most of the killers have been detained already and process is on to nab the rest,’ the minister added.
A senior official in police headquarters told New Age that as of Wednesday Babul was attached to the police headquarters and given no further posting.
Meanwhile, the posts of 14 senior police officials in the CMP were reshuffled on Monday.
The police headquarters assistance inspector general (administration), Rokfar Sultana, declined to comment on whether Babul was attending office duty while family members said Babul was staying at the house of his father-in-law.
On June 5, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu was shot and stabbed to death by assailants while she was walking along with her son to get the son to a school bus-stop near her apartment in GEC intersection in Chittagong city.
Babul Akter filed a case with Panchlaish police station for the murder on June 6 and the case was later transferred to the Detective Branch.
