Hasina accuses Khaleda of secret killings
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday accused the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its chairperson Khaleda Zia of their involvement in recent ‘secret killings and instigating militancy’ to destabilise the country.
Taking part in the discussion on the proposed budget for financial year 2016-17, she said that the there was no room for extremism in the country.
She said that her government had asked all the law enforcement agencies to bring to book all who were either involved in subversive and violent acts or ordered such acts.
Hasina criticised Khaleda for raising question about the killing of Ghulam Faizullah Fahim, the detained suspect in the hacking of a Madaripur College teacher, by police in a reported gunfight.
‘The militant was caught red-handed by local people while attacking a college teacher in Madaripur and was killed in crossfire or any other means…But why Khaleda Zia sheds crocodile tears,’ she said, alleging that it meant Khaleda, BNP and Jamaat had a link with the secret killings.
Ghulam Faizullah Fahim was killed in a reported gunfight with police on June 18 few hours after he was remanded in police custody for 10 days for interrogation in a case filed for critically wounding a Hindu college teacher of Madaripur.
Khaleda Zia alleged that the suspect was killed in a state-managed drama to hide the fact behind the terrorist attack on the teacher.
Hasina alleged that Khaleda ‘resorted to falsehood’ and was slandering her at iftar parties.
About coal-based power plant at Rampal near the Sunderbans, the prime minister claimed that the power plant would not harm the largest mangrove of the world.
She said that the her government ensured proper waste management systems for Ruppur nuclear power plant and Rampal power plant before taking the projects.
‘I do not know why they [who are opposing the power plant near the Sunderbans] are against the power plant. Coal is being used for filtering water, but they are advocating that the coal will pollute water and environment,’ she said.
Highlighting her government’s steps for development, Hasina said investment increased by 44 per cent in the country and more relaxed policies had been adopted to attract more investment.
About government’s success in power sector, the prime minister said that now 73 per cent people were under electricity coverage and hoped cent per cent coverage by 2021.
