BNP leader killed in Satkhira ‘gunfight’

A union level leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who was accused in 13 criminal cases, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ at Ganghati under Shyamnagar in Satkhira early Sunday.
The dead was identified as Oliullah Molla, 38, of Kashimari under Shyamnagar. He was the general secretary of Kashimari union unit of BNP.
He was wanted in at least 13 cases including cases for murder, toll collection and destructive activities, lodged with different police stations in Satkhira and Bagerhat, police said.
Shyamnagar police station officer-in-charge Md Enamul Haque said a team of police had been on duty at Chorakhal culvert point of village Ganghati while a group of people had been passing the area by motorcycles at around 3:30 am on Sunday.
As the police signaled them to stop, they, instead, hurled bombs and opened fire on police and police retaliated by firing while one of the ‘miscreants’ became injured by receiving bullet and the remaining ones managed to flee, he said.
The OC said that he was immediately taken to Shyamnagar upazila health complex where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Later he was identified as Oliullah Molla who was wanted in several cases including cases for murder.
He said that police recovered a motorcycle and one shutter gun from the spot.
