Profile:
Zahir Uddin Swapan (born 29 June 1960) is a Bangladeshi politician and former Member of Parliament of Barisal-1 constituency. Swapan was elected lawmaker for two times in a row since the 7th and 8th parliamentary elections in 1996 and 2001 respectively.
Swapan was expelled from the party during the 2008 army-backed caretaker government. At that time he was the information and research secretary of the BNP central committee.
The charge against him was to put him on the safe side and oppose the Zia family. Even excluding the Zia family, the then BNP secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan agreed to the reform proposal. Khaleda Zia expelled this leader from the party when the political situation was normal. The senior BNP leader was criticized in that incident.
After a long 10 years, Begum Khaleda Zia drew Swapan in the party’s difficult times.
Once upon a time, this brisk leftist student leader was attached with Chattra Moitry.
