First day of Jamaat hartal peaceful

The first day of 48-hour countrywide strike enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami protesting the death sentence of its assistant secretary general Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for his war crimes is progressing without any major incidents today.The party called the strike after the Appellate Division on Monday pronounced the verdict upholding the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman on charge of crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 war of independence.


The presence of vehicles was nearly usual and that the rail communication was uninterrupted while long-route buses and other vehicles did not move. Meanwhile a few numbers of private vehicles were seen on city roads.The authorities deployed Border Guard Bangladesh in different parts of the country including the capital to ensure security.


Our Khulna correspondent reports, no violent incident occurred in the city or other areas of the district; while public offices, business establishments, factories, industries and educational institutions remained operational.
Absence of picketers was significant in six upozilas of Munshiganj, where public buses run frequently reports our correspondent.
