HIMADRI KILLING VERDICT: Father, son, 3 others to die

A Chittagong court on Sunday sentenced all the five accused to death in the sensational Himadri Mazumder Himu murder case.
The perpetrators killed the A-level English medium student by setting dogs on him before pushing him off a four-story building in the port city in 2012 as he waged an anti-drug campaign in his locality.
Chittagong fourth additional metropolitan sessions judge Nurul Islam handed down the verdict.
The convicted were Shah Selim Tipu, 50, resident of the city’s Panchlaish Residential area, his son Junayed Ahmed Riad, 25, and Junayed’s friends Zahidul Islam Shaon, 23, Shahadat Hossain Sazu, 27, and Mahbub Ali Danny, 25, all residents of the area.
Of them Shah Selim Tipu, Shahadat and Mahbub, who were behind the bar, were produced in the dock during the delivery of the verdict while the rest two were absconding.
Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, the victim’s father, Prabir Mazumder, said he got justice.
‘The accused killed my son brutally. I have been waiting for the punishment of the culprits. Now I am satisfied that the court handed them highest punishment. I have got justice,’ said Prabir, a customs clearing and forwarding businessman and resident of Patiya upazila, resides at Hemsen Lane in the city.
Jewell Das, who moved the case for accused Shah Selim. Shahadat and Mahbub, told journalists that the accused did not get justice and they would appeal to the High Court against the verdict.
‘The investigation in the case was faulty. We will mention them in our appeal,’ the defence lawyer said.
According to the case documents, Himadri, a student of Summerfield School and College in Chittagong city’s Panchlaish area, was pushed off a four-story building in the city’s Panchlaish Residential Area after dogs were set on him on April 27, 2012.
Later, Himadri died from his injuries at a hospital on May 23, 26 days after the incident.
Asit Das, maternal uncle of the victim, filed a case against the five with the Panchlaish police.
On February 3, 2014, a court indicted the five in the murder case. The trial court gave the verdict after cross-checking 20 among 21 witnesses.
Additional public prosecutor Anupam Chakrabarty said at the direction of Shah Selim Tipu, the other accused picked Himadri, who was a member of an anti-drug organisation, Shikar, in the city, to the rooftop of a four-story building which was Tipu’s residence at Panchlaish.
‘Couple of days before the incident, one of the accused, Shahadat Hossain Sazu, was taking drugs at Panchlaish. A scuffle ensued as Himadri protest at it. At one point, Shah Selim Tipu came to the spot and stood for Shahadat, a close friend of his son Junayed. Selim threatened Himadri with dire consequence,’ said Anupam.
‘After taking Himadri to rooftop, four of the accused, except Tipu, set five ‘Doberman’ dogs on him. Later, they pushed Himadri off the rooftop. The accused were annoyed with Himadri as he protested at drug peddling and abuse in the area,’ said the APP.
The accused are from the ‘elite society’ and the four were almost the victim’s age, he said.
The victim, on his death bed, accused the five. A Shikar member recorded his voice which later was submitted in the trial court as evidence, the APP added.
