JnU students to march towards PMO today

The Jagannath University students on Sunday announced a march towards the Prime Minister’s Office to press home their demand for constructing residential halls on the land of just moved-out Dhaka Central Jail in the old part of the city.
Khairun Nesa, a student of philosophy department declared the programme on behalf of the agitators in the end of Sunday’s fresh strike on the campus, around 2:00pm.
The students closed all the entrances of various buildings of the university by 8:00am to toughen their strike.
Boycotting their classes and examinations, they took to various university points, including main Sadarghat-Farmgate road, and staged demonstrations until 1:45pm, forcing traffic to come to a standstill.
Raisul Islam Nayan, another organiser of the movement, said the students will continue their agitation until their ‘rational’ demands are met.
The registrar of the university, Md Ohiduzzaman, told New Age that the university authorities formed an 11-member body led by business studies dean professor Moniruzzaman to keep in touch with the agitators for a peaceful movement.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting chaired by JnU vice-chancellor Mijanur Rahman in his office on Sunday at 3:00pm.
The committee was asked to assist the students to guide them properly towards meeting their demands and not to boycott classes and examinations, the registrar said.
University teachers’ association president Kazi Saifuddin urged the students to agitate peacefully.
‘We want the students to go ahead with their movement peacefully,’ JnU proctor Noor Muhammad said, adding that they are trying hard so that the agitators do not turn violent.
Meanwhile, the university on August 11 wrote a letter to the government seeking permanent ownership of the former jail property.
The students have been demonstrating since August 1 in support of their demands.
