BNP asks activists to be organised to bring Tarique home

Bangladesh Nationalist Party senior leaders on Saturday urged party-men to unite and organise to forge a movement for return of the party senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman back home.
The party leaders made the call when addressing a discussion at Institution of Engineers’, Bangladesh organised by BNP to mark the ninth anniversary of the day of Tarique Rahman’s release from jail.
The past army-backed caretaker government arrested Tarique in 2007 and released him on September 3 in 2008. Tarique has been staying in the United Kingdom since September 2008 for his medical treatment.
BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain at the discussion said everyone has to get well-organised and united to put an end to the ‘autocratic’ government through peaceful democratic movement to bring Tarique back home and restore democracy. Then, the celebration of the day of Tarique Rahman’s release from jail will be a success, he added.
He said chanting slogans and making statements inside a room would not help to bring Tarique back home.
The standing committee member said the responsibility of BNP is to free the country from the ‘unwritten’ one-party BAKSAL rule and reestablish democracy through movement of the nationalist forces under the leadership of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to form an elected government through fair election toppling the incumbent autocratic government.
Mosharrf alleged that the ‘unconstitutional’ and ‘unusual’ government of ‘1/11’ tortured Tarique to kill him as his offense was that he had organised BNP at the grassroots level.
He said the conspiracy that started against Tarique is still on and the the incumbent government is continuing the mission of the ‘1/11’ government.
He said the government was scared of BNP as it represents the nationalist forces, scared of Tarique as he is the future leader of the party and afraid of Khaleda because if she takes to the streets and calls out to people there would be a mass uprising.
Another standing committee member Mirza Abbas said BNP could be weakened temporarily through repression but could not be eliminated. He said BNP will turn around and come to power.
BNP vice-chairman Mohammad Shahjahan said Tarique would definitely return to his homeland if the party leaders and activists carry out their responsibilities. When Tarique will come, another one will go, he said.
BNP leaders including Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Ahmed Azam Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, Zainul Abedin, Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Khairul Kabir Khokon and Shirin Sultana addressed the discussion presided over by vice-chairman Harun Al Rashid.
