JMB man hanged in Khulna

The jail authority in Khulna hanged Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh activist Asadul Islam Arif on Sunday more than 10 years after he was sentenced to death on charge of killing two judges in Jhalakati in 2005.

The execution of Arif took place in Khulna jail at about 10:30pm, said Khulna police commissioner Nibhas Chandra Majhi.

Arif, along with six other JMB leaders, was convicted in March 2006 of carrying out a bomb attack on the lower court judges.

The other convicts, including JMB founding leader Shaikh Abdur Rahman, were executed in March 2007.

The judicial confirmation of the death sentence of Arif had been delayed as he was arrested in July 2007, three months after the execution of others.

The Supreme Court upheld his death sentence August 28, 2016.

A jail official said he refused to seek presidential clemency, paving the way for his execution.
