Runaway prime accused rearrested, placed on remand

Police on Tuesday rearrested the prime accused in a Garo girl rape case Rafsan Hossain Rubel, who had escaped from police custody at chief metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Sunday.
Officer-in-charge of Badda police station MA Jalil said they arrested Rubel in front of the Subastu Tower in the capital during a drive in the morning.
Following his re-arrest, Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Gulshan zone deputy commissioner Mustak Ahmed at a press conference said the detained had slipped out of the court and had gone to Shakharibazar.
On his way, he managed a piece of cloth with which he covered his hands, he said, referring to Rubel’s confession to police.
The accused then went to a mosque, offered prayers and waited there until it was dark. He received Tk 1,000 from one of his relatives through bkash and came to Gulistan from where he went to Badda that night.
Later, the accused moved to Vatara and failing to contact his friends, spent the night on the roof of an under- construction building.
On Monday, after wandering in different areas, he came back to Subastu Tower in the evening and passed the night in a dormitory.
In the morning, when Rubel again came near the tower to go out of Dhaka, sub-inspector of Badda police station BM Mamun captured him, the DC narrated. Police later produced him before a metropolitan magistrate court, seeking a 10-day remand.
Magistrate Shadbir Yeasir Ahsan Chowdhury granted a six-day remand in police custody.
Asked whether he had any lawyer, Rubel replied in the negative and said he would speak for himself.
He submitted that police had brought him to the court on Sunday and forced him to give dictated confessional statement after inhuman torture. He alleged that police also threatened to kill him if he disobeyed their instruction. ‘That is why I fled to save my life.’
Rapid Action Battalion had detained Rubel on Friday in the city’s airport rail station area on charge of raping an ethnic Garo minority girl inside a microbus in the capital’s Badda in October 25.
Later two cops brought Rubel to the chamber of metropolitan magistrate Emdadul Huq for recording his confessional statement.
But the accused escaped when the police investigator left him alone and entered the chamber of the magistrate to seek permission for taking the accused to the magistrate’s chamber.
Rubel allegedly raped the 18-year-old woman after she had gone to north Badda to meet her betrothed on October 25.
