EC asks ministries not to allocate dev funds.

The Election Commission on Sunday asked ministries not to allocate any funds for the development of the election areas or bring any changes to the administration without its approval. The commission also asked the home ministry to maintain law and order in the run-up to the city polls. Besides, the commission asked Bangladesh Bank to provide it with a list of loan defaulters. According to EC officials, the commission sent four letters signed by EC secretary Sirazul Islam to the local government and rural development and cooperatives ministry, public administration ministry, home ministry and to the central bank. In its letter to the BB, the commission asked the credit information bureau of the central bank to provide the returning officers with the list of loan defaulters so that they could not contest the civic polls in Dhaka and Chittagong scheduled for April 28.

In the letter to the LGRD and cooperatives ministry, the commission asked it not to allocate any funds for any projects like test relief, food for work, OMS, VGD and VGF so that no aspirants could influence the voters using the funds. According to the city corporation electoral code of conduct, no candidate or anyone on behalf of a candidate would be able to give or promise to give any donation or grants to any organisation or institution covertly or overtly. Besides, it asked the public administration ministry to take approval from the commission before bringing about any changes to the administration in the election areas and asked the home ministry to take necessary measures to maintain law and order in the election areas in the run-up to the polls.
