Kamaruzzaman gets time to seek presidential clemency.
The government has given time until this morning for war crimes death row inmate Muhammad Kamaruzzman to decide whether or not he would apply for presidential clemency, law minister Anisul Huq said Wednesday night. Kamaruzzaman has also been allowed to meet and consult his lawyers at 11AM today to decide whether he would apply to the President to seek mercy, said jailor Naser Alam of Dhaka Central Jail. Defence lawyer Shishir Manir told New Age that deputy jailor Mohammad Lablu of Dhaka Central Jail called him over phone at 7.30 PM on Wednesday to meet Kamaruzzaman at 11 AM today. Jailor Naser Alam confirmed the permitted timing of meeting between the death row inmate and his five lawyers. Law minister Anisul Huq told New Age at 7.55 PM that he came to know from the home ministry that Kamaruzzaman had been given time until Thursday morning to decide whether or not he would seek clemency from the President. Dhaka Central Jail superintendent Farman Ali read out the verdict of the Appellate Division to Kamaruzzaman. . Jail officials told reporters that Kamaruzzaman wished to meet his lawyers for consultations. The International Crimes Tribunal registrar’s office after receiving three copies of the 36-page verdict of the apex court at 4.45pm forwarded a copy to the jail authorities at 5.30pm, said registrar in charge Md Aftabuzzaman.
The Appellate Division released the full verdict on Kamaruzzaman’s review petition after all the four judges signed it 3.10 PM on Wednesday, two days after the apex court had dismissed the petition, said additional Supreme Court registrar Sabbir Foyez. On November 3, 2014, the apex court in a 3-1 decision had upheld the verdict of the ICT -2 that had sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami leader Kamaruzzaman to death for his 1971 war crimes. This was the second verdict of the apex court in review petitions since December 12, 2013 when it dismissed the review petition of executed war crimes convict Abdul Quader Molla.
