Annisul slates police attack on protesters.
Dhaka north city mayor Annisul Huq on Tuesday lambasted the police for attacking protesters against sexual harassment of women on Pahela Baishakh.The protesters went to besiege the metropolitan police headquarters on Sunday as police failed to arrest those who sexually harassed women during Bengali New Year celebrations at Dhaka University.At a reception of newly elected mayors of Dhaka north and south cities, Annisul said such attack on female protesters by police ran counter to ‘safe city for women’.Sahasra Nagarik Committee [Thousand Citizen Committee], which backed Awami League-supported mayoral candidates in DCCs elections, organised the reception for the mayors.‘We have pledged safe city for women in our elections manifesto, but what did you [police] do yesterday [Monday]? Your attack on female protesters, who demanded justice in the incident of sexual harassment on women in Pahela Baishakh celebrations, has made us ashamed,’ Annisul said.
‘Look at the photos; what you have done… She could be your daughter or sister. The whole nation is disappointed with what you have done,’ the DNCC mayor said.Annisul said he would free the DNCC of free. ‘People used to term DCC as “Dhaka Corruption City Corporation”. I am assuring you that my corporation would be corruption-free. Everyone in my corporation would be responsible for their jobs,’ he said.‘I have pledged everything to city dwellers consciously and I will keep those promises,’ he said.DSCC mayor Sayeed Khokon said people in Dhaka would soon taste the fruits of his promise.He said all the lampposts in DSCC would be in operation by the next Shab-e-Barat and waste management would be modernised soon.Khokon said World Bank had shown its interest to restore the rivers in Dhaka to their previous state.Sahasra Nagarik Committee convener Syed Shamsul Haque, its member secretary Golam Kuddus, Awami League leaders Abdur Razzaq, Dipu Moni, Dhaka University vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique, playwright Nasiruddin Yousuf Bachchu, among others, spoke.
