Novelist Showkat Ali on life support

Ekushey Padak winning novelist Showkat Ali was taken on life support at Lab Aid Cardiac Hospital in the capital on Saturday morning as his condition deteriorated.
The 81-year old novelist’s son, Asif Showkat, said that Showkat Ali was earlier admitted to intensive care unit of Lab Aid Hospital on Thursday with severe lungs infection and diabetes-related problems, from which he has been suffering for a few years.
Born on February 12, 1936, in North Dinajpur (formerly West Dinajpur) of West Bengal, Showkat Ali involved himself in leftist politics during his student days.
Beginning his career as a journalist, he later shifted to teaching. 
He won the Philips Literary Award for his trilogy of novels Dakkhinayoner Din, Kulai Kalsrot and Purbaratri Purbadin. 
His other novels include Pradoshe Prakritojon, Uttarer Khep, Obasheshe Propat, Janoni O Jatika, Pingal Akash, Jorh Bijorh and others.
He has also edited compilations of stories like Unmul Basona, Lelihan Sadh, Shuno He Lokhindor, and Baba Apne Jan. 
In 1990, Ali won the Ekushey Padak for his contributions to literature. He has also won Bangla Academy Award in 1968, Humayun Kabir Memorial Award in 1977, Ajit Guha Literary Prize in 1982, Philips Literary Award in 1986 and Alaul Literary Award in 1989.
