BUET closed for indefinite period

Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology was closed sine die on Thursday in face of ‘attack by some students on the university authorities and the administrative building’ demanding deferment of scheduled examinations. The BUET authorities ordered the students to vacate the dormitories by 5pm Thursday. They blamed that attack on a group of students who had besieged the offices of BUET’s vice-chancellor, registrar and students’ welfare director on June 23, demanding postponement of term final examinations. The decisions were taken at an emergency meeting and notice was put on the board, said the university Public Relations Officer Shah Alam. Students of the university said that term final examinations were scheduled to begin from June 27. Some students were opposing the schedule and they refused to take the examination during Ramadan. To enforce their demand, a group of students besieged the offices of BUET vice-chancellor and registrar on Tuesday, demanding the deferment of their examinations. The following day, they also besieged teachers in the residential area. Furthermore, they vandalised and set fire to the administrative building at night, which forced the authorities to close the university indefinitely to maintain law and order on campus, said a press release signed by registrar AKM Masud. Locals said the students had vandalised the BUET cafeteria, faculty of engineering building and other establishments, Wednesday night. A huge continent of police was deployed on the university campus to avert any untoward incident.
