EC can’t assure flawless election: CEC

Chief election commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Tuesday said that there was no guarantee that there would be no irregularity in the next general election scheduled for January 28, 2019 at the latest.
‘I cannot assure that there will be no irregularity anywhere during such a huge public election. But we will try our best to control irregularities conducting investigations or following other means. Actions will be taken in case of any anomaly,’ the CEC told reporters.
He made the comments after inaugurating a workshop on challenges for physically-challenged voters to participate in the electoral process at the Election Training Institute in the capital.
Nurul Huda, however, said the next parliamentary elections would not witness the problems seen in the recently held city corporation elections.
Asked if he felt any discomfort for the irregularities in the city polls, he answered in the negative.
Replying to a question about anomalies in the recent city corporation elections in Barisal, Sylhet and Rajshahi, he said it was quite normal that some anomalies would occur in such public elections and the EC took massive actions where there were massive anomalies.
The CEC said the schedule for general election would be announced in October to hold the polls in December or early January next year.
