Constitutional recognition of ethnic minorities demanded

Speakers at a programme on Wednesday demanded constitutional recognition of ethnic minority people and ensuring their right to land.
They also demanded providing essential assistance to the ethic people and stopping repression on them.
Garo Students’ Union organised the programme in front of the Central Shaheed Minar on the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples that falls on Thursday.
Speaking at the programme, Fazle HossainBadsha, MP, said, ‘The ethnic minority people are being deprived of many facilities across the country. We should keep it mind that they’re also the citizens of our country like others. We hope they’ll get constitutional recognition and other facilities like other citizens.’
Professor Robaet Ferdous of Dhaka University’s Mass Communication and Journalism department lamented that the minority groups are always oppressed in the country although Bangladesh is not a religion-based country.
‘We also observe that the ethnic minority women are being raped in different places of our country. But law enforces don’t take any step to punish the rapists. We hope there’ll be an end to repression on them and they’ll get all rights like others,’ he added.
Shoibal Ransha, vice-president of Garo Students’ Union, among others, addressed the programme.
