BNP enforces Hartal in Habiganj as former mayor attacked in jail
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party enforced a half-day general strike in Habiganj on Sunday protesting as suspended Habiganj municipal mayor GK Gaus was injured in an attack in Habiganj jail on Saturday.
No motorised vehicles plied the roads and no intercity bus left or reached Habiganj during hartal hours, from 6:00am to noon.
BNP leaders and activists brought out processions and held rallies during hartal hours.
Addressing the rallies, BNP leaders, including district BNP joint secretary Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury and municipal unit president Aminur Rashid Emran, demanded independent investigation into the attack and immediate release of Gaus.
They said that also the general strike was initially called for whole day, they enforced it for half-day considering public sufferings as it Sunday was the day following Eid-ul-Fitr.
Gaus, also a BNP leader, has been in jail since November 28 in a case filed for the murder of former finance minister SAMS Kibria.
Habiganj jail sources said that a murder accused, Ilias Mia, attacked Gaus in jail after Eid prayer at about 9:00am leaving him seriously injured.
Gaus was sent to Dhaka for treatment as advised by Habiganj Sadar Hospital physicians called in for his treatment.
As the news spread, BNP leaders and activists staged protests on Saturday blocking highway and called a daylong general strike for Sunday.
