Election under neutral govt, not necessarily caretaker: Khaleda
Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday said a neutral government under any name, not necessarily caretaker government, is now necessary for a free, fair and neutral election.
‘Fair and neutral election will never be possible under the Awami League. A neutral government is necessary to hold a free and fair election. I would not call it a caretaker government, it can be in any name’, Khaleda said at a function.
Khaleda was addressing a meeting with newly elected BNP-backed office bearers of Brahmanbaria Bar Association at her Gulshan office.
Khaleda said all political activities had totally stopped as meetings, processions and human chains are not being allowed. Such situation cannot continue, she added.
She came down hard on the government for the recent loss of lives in road accidents. She said 242 people lost their lives in the last 10 days in road accidents due to the bad shape of highways.
Khaleda said the government paid no attention to their work and their only goal was to destroy BNP.
She said BNP cannot be eliminated as its roots ‘were deep in the soil of this country and the hearts of the people.’
The BNP chairperson said the incumbent government wanted to cling to power using police and RAB.
She said the Awami League was afraid of election as they knew it would not return to power if it quit power.
Khaleda blamed Awami League men for beating kids tied to a tree.
BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Brahmanbaria Bar association president Abdul Mannan, secretary Tariqul Islam, among others, addressed the meeting.
