Former Indian FM Sushma Swaraj dies

India’s former foreign minister and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s influential leader Sushma Swaraj has died, confirmed NDTV referring to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi.

She was 67.

Sushma had a kidney transplant two years ago and was not well lately, said the news portal.

The senior BJP leader suffered a cardiac arrest. She was administered CPR but did not respond, reported the Hindu.

She was rushed to the hospital by her family sometime after 9:00pm on Tuesday when she was taken ill, the newspaper added.

Swaraj had a kidney transplant in 2016 and had opted out of contesting Lok Sabha polls earlier this year for health reasons.

She is survived by her husband Swaraj Kaushal and daughter Bansuri.

On Twitter, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi described her as a ‘prolific orator and outstanding parliamentarian’ who was ‘admired and revered across party lines’.

‘Hours before her death, Ms Swaraj had tweeted congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the passage of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation bill in parliament,’ said NDTV.
