BCL man beats teenager to death
A teenage boy was beaten to death in the capital’s Hazaribagh area by a local Chhatra League leader for allegedly stealing a mobile phone set Monday afternoon.
The deceased was identified Md Raja, 17, son of Babul Hossain, of 46, Ganaktuli, Hazaribagh, and a steel shop employee.
The deceased’s family members alleged Hazaribgh unit Chhatra League president Arju Mia and his associates kept the teenager detained for hours and beaten him up indiscriminately, leading to his death.
This is the fourth case where a teenager has been tortured to death in the last one and-a-half month.
13-year-old Samiul Alam Rajan was tortured to death in Sylhet on July 8.
On the night of August 3, Mohammod Rakib, 12, died in Khulna after his former employer pumped air through his rectum for taking a job at another car repair workshop.
A day later, 10-year-old madrassah student Robiul Awal died as his eyes were gouged out after being mercilessly beaten up for allegedly stealing fish.
In the latest incident, it appeared the BCL men tortured the boy indiscriminately as several marks of injury and a hole in the head were found on Raja’s body, said Hazaribagh police sub-inspector Rezaul Islam.
He was beaten with something heavy implement on the head which caused his death, said doctors.
Raja’s aunt Ratna Akhter said Arju, his associates Monirul Islam, SK Babu, Sagar and others, had killed the boy inside their house at Ganaktuli area of Hazaribagh.
She said Raja was a worker at his brother-in-law’s shop at Kamrangirchar. He used to live there and seldom visited their house at Ganaktuli.
Arju’s mobile phone was stolen from his house Sunday night. He suspected that Raja might have stolen the mobile set and alleged he saw Raja wandering near their house that night, said the deceased’s family members.
The Chhtara League leader and two of his associates had picked Raja up from Ganaktuli lane around 10am Monday and taken him to the house, said locals.
Raja’s sister Reshma then went to Arju’s house and begged for boy’s release.
Arju promised Reshma they would only quiz Raja about the theft. Arju’s family members forced Reshma to leave the house, said Bina Akhter, a sister-in-law of Raja.
Later, Arju and his associates beat Raja indiscriminately till the boy lost conscious.
Arju then hired a van and handed over Raja to his family members around 4pm claiming he fell unconscious after taking drugs, said the aunt.
Raja was then taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 5pm where doctors declared him dead.
Family members said Arju had killed the boy and tried to escape responsibility by making up the drug story.
Hazaribagh police officer-in-charge Moinul Islam said they detained three people, Monirul Islam, ward no. 22 Juba League president, Sagar and Sujon.
Despite several attempts, Arju’s mobile was found switched off.
Police said that they were trying to arrest Arju.
