Train crushes 16 migrant workers sleeping on track in India

Sixteen migrant workers of a group of 21 were run over by a cargo train in Aurangabad of Indian state of Maharashtra on Friday morning.

The workers were returning to Madhya Pradesh, reports NDTV.

The migrants who had been walking along the tracks slept on the tracks near Karmad, said an official. They were run over by the passing train at 5:15am at the district 360 km from Mumbai.

‘During early hours today after seeing some labourers on track, loco pilot of goods train tried to stop the train but eventually hit them between Badnapur and Karmad stations in Parbhani-Manmad section. Injured have been taken to Aurangabad Civil Hospital. Inquiry has been ordered,’ the railway ministry tweeted.

Prime minister Narendra Modi tweeted ‘all possible assistance’ is being provided.

Though several states have been running special trains for migrant workers who need to return home for emergency reasons, many have started walking back on their own.
