COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY NOTES : Banks, govt agencies asked to remain alert before Eid
Bangladesh Bank has asked different government agencies and private organisations to take adequate measures so that use of counterfeit currency notes can be checked at the sacrificial animal markets before Eid-ul-Azha.
A BB official told New Age on Thursday that the central bank had already issued a number of letters to all its branch offices, all scheduled banks, home ministry, information ministry, Dhaka City Corporation North and DCC South to take measures in this regard.
The central bank issued the letters recently asking them to ensure continuous monitoring on the sacrificial animal market before Eid as rings of counterfeiters usually remained active during the period.
The BB issued a letter to the information ministry requesting it to take initiative to air advertisement in different television channels to create awareness among the people so that they can detect the genuine notes and counterfeit notes.
The BB requested the information ministry to issue a letter to the Association of Television Channel Owners to air advertisement in this regard.
The BB also requested the information ministry to set up TV monitors at important rail stations, bus and launch terminals of the country to aware the people about the counterfeit notes as huge number of people usually gather there before Eid-ul-Azha.
Besides, the central bank will also publish advertisements in newspapers to describe the characteristics of the genuine notes in a bid to aware the clients. It will publish the advertisements for five days before Eid-ul-Azha.
The BB asked the scheduled banks to set up TV monitors in all their branches across the country so that the clients will be able to detect the counterfeit notes.
The BB asked the scheduled banks located in the Dhaka City Corporation areas to open booths with counterfeit detector machines at the sacrificial animal market.
The central bank asked its regional offices to provide counterfeit detection machines to the police and Boarder Guard Bangladesh so that they can play role in tackling the counterfeit notes outside the Dhaka city.
Besides, the branch offices of the BB will also work with other banks so that they could set up counterfeit detector machine on cluster basis outside the Dhaka city.
The BB requested the home ministry to issue letters to chief of police, RAB and BGB so that they remain active to tackle the rings of counterfeiters.
The central bank requested Dhaka City Corporation North and South to give adequate support to the banks in this regard.
