Mobile subscribers cross 13cr mark

Active mobile subscribers in the country crossed the 13-crore mark in August as the six mobile phone operators added more than 21 lakh users in the month.
According to the latest data of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, the total mobile users reached 13.08 crore when four mobile companies witnessed growth and two lost clients.
The mobile internet subscribers in the country reached 5.07 crore as 15 lakh mobile internet users were added in August.
Telecom operators, however, said the number of actual mobile subscribers would be much lower than 13 crore as many of the users own multiple SIM cards.
They said the figure of mobile users might face a big dent by the end of the year if the government terminates unregistered SIM cards.
The government is currently verifying SIM registrations with the national identity card database.
Market leader Grameenphone added 11 lakh subscribers in August, which took its total subscriber base to 5.50 crore.
‘GP’s EasyNet campaign launched in August drew people’s attention. The surge in the subscribers perhaps was the reflection of that,’ Grameenphone head of external communication Syed Talat Kamal said when asked about the issue.
Banglalink’s subscriber base reached 3.28 crore in the month as the operator added four lakh subscribers.
Robi added four lakh subscribers in August, which took its total subscriber base to 2.83 crore.
Airtel’s subscriber base reached 93.92 lakh in the month as the operator added 3.12 lakh subscribers.
Citycell’s subscriber base came down to 11.38 lakh in August as it lost 23,000 users in the month.
State-run Teletalk lost 1.42 lakh customers in August, which brought down its subscriber base to 40.79 lakh.
