Power plants to affect flora and fauna of Sunderbans
Leaders of the Communist Party of Bangladesh and Socialist Party of Bangladesh on Wednesday said that the people of the country would not allow any power plant projects destroying the Sunderban, the biggest mangrove forest in the world.
They were addressing rallies on their way to the World Heritage Site, under a five day road march. The leaders demanded that the government scrap the Rampal coal based thermal power plant and proposed Orion thermal power plant project.
On the second day, the leaders and activists of those two parties started their march from Savar and held rallies in front of Manikganj Press Club. There, CPB advisor Manjurul Ahsan Khan said the proposed coal based thermal power plants will destroy the Sunderban and the ecology of the area.
He termed the agreement signed with an Indian company as contrary to the peoples’ interests and said it is the Indian company that would be more benefited if the Rampal Thermal Power Plant was implemented.
The SPB general secretary Khalequzzaman said that the proposed plants situated within 14-kilometer periphery of the Sunderban. Therefore, it would seriously affect the flora and fauna of the forest.
Chaired by CPB, Manikganj district committee president Azharul Islam, the rally was addressed, among others by the central leaders of CPB, Ruhin Hossain Prince, SPB central leader Razequzzaman Ratan, CPB central leader Joly Talukder and SPB leader Nikhil Das.
The marchers scheduled to hold a rally in Faridpur town and start for Jessore today.
