Reconsider Rampal power plant: WP

Workers Party of Bangladesh, a partner of the Awami League led government, urged the government to reconsider implementation of coal based Rampal Thermal Power Plant near the Sunderbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world.
The WP president and also civil aviation and tourism minister Rashed Khan Menon, said that the issue of the establishing Rampal Power Plant should be reconsidered as it might affect the Sunderbans.
He said his party supported the movement of save the Sunderbans.
He said the local people would be suffered immensely if the Sunderbans was destroyed.
He also urged the government to protect the country’s tourism sector.
Referring the three-month anarchy by BNP led alliance, Menon said the tourism industry was largely affected by the anarchy.
Menon said these while he was addressing a discussion meeting titled ‘role of nature and tourism in the sustainable development’ at National Press Club in the capital. Dhaka city unit of the Workers Party organised the programme.
Dhaka city WP president Abul Hossain presided over the programme while member of the parliamentary committee on forests and environment ministry Yasin Ali, chairman of Bangladesh Parjatan  Corporation Aparup Chowdhury, Dhaka university teacher of tourism and hospitality management Santosh Kumar Dev, general secretary of BAPA Abdul Maitin, tourism experts Rezaul Ekram Mohiuddin Helal, spoke, among others.
