WP wants govt to ban politics of Jamaat, Shibir
Workers Party of Bangladesh, a partner of the Awami League-led alliance on Monday demanded a ban on politics of Jamaat-e-Islami, the main Islamist party of the country and its front student organisation, Islami Chhatra Shibir.
WP also expressed its satisfaction over executing death sentences against two war crime convicts, Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, on early Sunday.
The Dhaka City unit of the party organised a rally in front of the National Press Club where general secretary of the party Fazle Hossain Badsha called on the government to complete the trials of the rest of the war criminals as early as possible.
He argued that such a prohibition would save the nation from the guilt of crimes against humanity committed by Jamaat men during the war of independence in 1971.
Bad said Jamaat’s politics should also be stopped because they were responsible for carrying out militancy in the country.
Abul Hossain, president of the city unit chaired the rally and called on the government to take drastic steps to contain Islamic extremism as the party was trying to invite chaos in the country.
Kishore Roy, general secretary of the city unit, central leaders Mostafa Alamgir Ratan, Modina Khanam and Murshida Akhter Nahar among others spoke.
The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
In 2013, Bangladesh’s High Court had declared the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party illegal due to the party’s non-conformity with the constitution. Such verdict keeps off the party from taking part in any national election.
