Gen Jacob commemorated

As the freedom fighters paid their homage on Wednesday to the former Indian General, JFR Jacob for his momentous role in the war of Bangladesh’s independence, they said his name resemble to the history of Bangladesh.
They said it was Jacob who had foreseen 16th December and was a true architect of Bangladesh’s victory day in 1971.
The observation came on Wednesday at a commemoration in the city organised by Liberation War Museum.
Freedom fighter ASM Samsul Arefin said Jacob was a true friend of Bangladesh who played an outstanding role in the war of independence in 1971.
He loved Bangladesh very dearly and formulated the strategies of the war to defeat the erstwhile Pakistani occupation army, Arefin said.
‘We have lost a true friend of Bangladesh who helped the freedom fighters to accomplish final victory on December 16 in 1971,’ SIM Nurunnabi, another freedom fighter, said.
Nurunnabi said he loved Bangladesh so much that he paid several visits to this country.
J Nanda, the adviser to the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, said Jacob was a military officer who played a crucial role in Indian army.
Nanda said Jacob’s contribution is a landmark in the history of Bangladesh’s liberation war.
He thanked the officials of the Liberation War Museum and the people of Bangladesh for such a commemoration to express gratitude after the death of the great warrior, Jacob Farj Rafael.
The trustees of the Liberation War Museum Sarwar Ali and Ziauddin Tariq Ali gave welcome addresses at the commemoration.
Singer Eraboti Mandol rendered commemoration songs.
Jacob, then a Major General, served as the Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command during the war of independence. During his 36-year career in the army, he had also fought in World War II and the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965. He later served as the Governor of the Indian states of Goa and Punjab.
Jacob died on January 13, at the age 92, in India.
