PM admits gas crisis
The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday admitted that there is gas crisis in the country and said that it happened as gas gets concentrated in winter, slowing down its flow.
‘I am admitting that there are some problems but we are trying hard to mitigate the crisis,’ she said in Parliament.
Replying to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Ziauddin Ahmed during the PM’s question-answer session in Parliament, she said that during winter natural gas gets concentrated slowing down its flow.
She also said that the government was trying hard to mitigate the crisis and took various steps for improving the supply. She also said that the government has decided to import liquid natural gas to meet the gas crisis.
‘We are improving the gas production, but the demand for gas is increasing substantially with the growing development activities,’ she added.
The prime minister also mentioned that an LNG terminal is being constructed and after its completion it would be possible to import gas.
Hasina said the government has waived tax on the liquid petroleum gas (LPG) to attract more investors in this sector.
Responding to another supplementary question, the prime minister said that people of the country were the source of all her strength.
She made the statement when Jatiya Party lawmaker Fakhrul Imam wanted to know from the prime minister what gives her courage to run the country smoothly citing a poll, conducted by the Center for Insights in Survey Research of the International Republican Institute which mentioned that the country is heading towards right direction.
