Univs should concentrate more on research activities
President Abdul Hamid underscored the need for expanding the area of research in universities, saying that research helps create new knowledge that contributes to building knowledge-based society.
‘As research is the main part of higher education, research activities need to be increased in universities to take the standard of education to international standard,’ the president said while addressing the 4th convocation of Chittagong University on Sunday.
He said Bangladesh is on the way of progress and it has achieved significant stride in education, women empowerment, agriculture, sanitation and ICT. For maintaining this progress, social discipline and democratic values will have to be upheld, he added.
‘We’ve to ensure that the hard-earned democracy is not hampered in any way,’ he added.
He said the government has taken up programmes to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021 and developed country by 2041. Continuous efforts, self-criticism and cooperation in implementation of these programmes are needed for the government, he added.
Congratulating the graduates for completing their university education successfully, the president termed them as higher human resources of the country and asked them to devote themselves to the development of the country.
‘Today’s convocation is giving recognition of your achievement and on the other hand, it is bestowing responsibilities on you and these responsibilities are towards your family, society, above all towards the country and nation,’ reminded the president who is also the chancellor of the university.
‘I firmly believe that you would use your hard-earned knowledge and talents honestly and positively. You must keep it in mind that if knowledge is not used for the welfare purposes, it is not considered as knowledge,’ he added.
Emeritus Professor Anisuzzaman delivered convocation speech. University Grants Commission chairman Professor Abdul Mannan and Chittagong University VC Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury also spoke at the convocation.
