Rehabilitation demanded for slum dwellers before eviction
Rights activists and slum dwellers on Saturday urged the authorities not to demolish any slum without rehabilitating the residents.
They also demanded multi-storey apartments for slum dwellers from a human chain held in front of National Press Club, said a press release.
The programme was jointly organised by NBUS, NDBUS, Bostibashi Surokkha Committee, Sattola Bosti Central CBO and Bostibashi Union.
According to a High Court verdict 1999, no slum could be evicted despite rehabilitation, said the release.
But the verdict was currently largely ignored, alleged the organisations’ leaders.
They said about 30 lakh slum dwellers were playing an important role in the capital as transport workers, domestic helps, security guards and employees at different offices.
The slum dwellers need to be rehabilitated as city could not be active without them, they further said.
They also demanded multi-storey apartments for slum dwellers based on long-term instalments.
They urged prime minister Sheikh Hasina and all conscientious people to stand for the slum dwellers.
The human chain was attended, among others, by NDBUS general secretary Fatema Akhter, Sattola slum leader Selina Begum, Aslam Khan, Rebecca Khandaker, Abdus Sobhan and Abdul Barek and different slums’ dwellers.
